Courtney's Bar Whiskey Selection

"I am going, I am going ... where streams of Whiskey are flowing"

Whiskey

Whiskey is our passion, it is literally the "Water of Life" (Uisce Beatha)
We Irish claim to have invented and perfected it.
The grains from which it is derived are abundant on our shores
the skill and patience of the master distillers have been passed through generations,
it is the product of of our inventiveness , our imagination and our love.
The great Kerry playwright John B. Keane described it thus:
"No man was ever born into this world with such a passionate love of liquor than myself,
it isn't that I love liquor for the taste of it, I love the "plop" of whiskey into a glass, I love it,
I love to listen to it, I love to see the cream on a pint, I love the first powerful, violent impact of a glass of whiskey
when I throw it back in me and when it hits the mark below.
I chase it then with a pint and thats even more beautiful still"

Greenspot

Type: Single Pot Still – Alcohol: 40% – Age 7-9 Years Old
Country: Ireland – Cask: 75% Bourbon 25% Sherry

Green Spot is made at Midleton from pot still whiskey aged between seven and nine years, with 25% coming from sherry casks and is one of the lighter whiskeys in the Pot Still range. Made in very limited quantities, it is highly prized by drinkers, whiskey writers and Courtneys Staff. Delicate and nuanced.

Auchentoshan

Type: Single Malt – Alcohol: 40% – Age: 12 Years Old
Country: Scotland – Cask: Bourbon, Sherry

Auchentoshan is a Lowland Distillery which almost uniquely among Scottish Distillers, uses Triple Distillation leading to a smoother more rounded Whisky akin to the “Irish” style. The 12 yr maturation period in both Bourbon and Sherry casks adds a beautiful depth of flavour.

Talisker

Type: Single Malt – Alcohol: 45.8% – Age: 10 Years Old
Country: Scotland – Cask: American Oak

This single malt from the Isle of Skye has the lustrous, deep golden coloring of apple juice. The nose is a classic, practically the benchmark for a fragrantly oily, smoke, spicy whisky scent. Whiffs of green apple and sea spray add some complexity, giving you something to sniff at each time you bring the glass up for a sip.

Laphroaig

Type: Single Malt – Alcohol: 40% – Age: 10 Years Old
Country: Scotland – Cask: American Oak

This Islay single malt is typical of its style, being a full-bodied, smoky gem, with a residual sweetness and a hint of salt amid the seaweedy, peaty characters before a long warming finish. A classic dram.

Redbreast 12

Type: Single Pot Still – Alcohol: 40% – Age: 12 Years Old
Country: Ireland – Cask: Bourbon, Sherry

One of the most decorated Irish whiskeys, Redbreast is the largest selling Single Pot Still Irish whiskey in the world and is regarded as the definitive expression of traditional Pot Still whiskey.

Full of aroma and flavour, Redbreast 12 Year Old benefits from a strong contribution from distillates which have matured in Oloroso sherry casks, giving it its trademark Christmas cake character.

Knappogue Castle 14 Yr Old

Type: Single Malt – Alcohol: 46% – Age: 14 Years Old
Country: Ireland – Cask: Bourbon, Sherry

This is both richer and more complex than the standard twelve year old Knappogue Castle. Named ‘Twin Wood’ because both Bourbon and Sherry cask types have been used for the maturation. It seems that the sherry casks have added to the body and depth and also brought some spice and dried fruit flavours. Like most of the current Knappogue Castle whiskeys this was made using unpeated, triple distilled single malt whiskey from a Northern Irish distillery. Limited numbers were made of this whiskey and it is bottled un-chilfiltered and at 46%.

Powers Johns Lane

Type: Single pot Still – Alcohol: 46% – Age: 12 Years Old
Country: Ireland – Cask: Bourbon, Oloroso Sherry

This is to our mind the best expression of Powers available on the market and a homage to its fine heritage. A single pot still incarnation of Powers , named for the now-defunct old Johns Lane distillery. This is a very classy whiskey made using a combination of bourbon and oloroso-sherry-cask-matured spirit.

Lagavulin

Type: Single Malt – Alcohol: 43% – Age: 16 Years Old
Country: Ireland – Cask: Bourbon, Sherry

The Islay representative in the ‘Classic Malts’ series is a deep, dry and exceptionally peaty bruiser. Probably the most pungent of all Islay malts, Lagavulin is not for the faint-hearted but inspires fanatical devotion in its many followers.
